Meet our Lecturers | David from South Africa

Hello! I’m David van der Merwe. 42 years ago I entered the weird, wild world that is South Africa. Since then I’ve done a stack of stuff, but the most relevant would be my undergraduate training in Graphic Design, my honours studies in Visual Culture, and my Master’s degree in Cultural Branding – which is now my primary field of expertise.

These, combined with over twenty years of creative industry experience (from a designer to an illustrator to an art director to a creative director and a brand manager) and several short stints in lecturing have brought me to where I am now at Creative Business.

Fun facts include: my (unpaid) side hustle is reviewing music for the Canadian online magazine V13 Media (@v13media); that I play the great highland bagpipe; that I’m a massive Star Wars nerd; that I worked in Hong Kong way back in 2004; and that I spent 2009 to 2013 tattooing as my primary day job – now it’s just a hobby, along with writing, art, and my pets.

Of all the courses I teach at CB, Creativity for first years and Transcultural Creative Strategies for second years are my favourites: the former because it’s so much fun (and let’s face it, without creativity, there is no Creative Business) and the latter because cultural specificities and their impact on creative processes, strategies and outcomes are what makes life in the creative industries interesting. Challenging too, but rewarding – and I love being able to help students move from research to application in a single course.

The one piece of advice I can offer, after all my years as a creative, is to never undervalue yourself or what you have to offer.
