Digital exams

At HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht, we will be working with two forms of digital exams from 29 March 2021. This will be mainly BYOD-based (Bring Your Own Device). If that is not possible, we will keep administering exams through online proctoring.

There are a few exceptions where exams are administered in another way. In that case, you will be informed about these exams by your own degree programme.

What does BYOD mean and how is it different from online proctoring?

Online proctoring   BYOD
The exam is administered on a device owned and provided by the student.   The exam is administered at the HU on a device owned and provided by the student.
The proctoring software records the ID of the student and web camera images and sound.

An invigilator will be present to check the ID and monitor the exam proceedings ‘as usual’ . Additionally, proctoring software will be used but it does not record the ID, nor does it record web camera images or sound. However, the student’s screen will be captured and it will monitor which websites are visited by the student, for example.
After the exam, reports will be assessed by a reviewer to see whether there is any reason to suspect irregularities.   After the exam, the reports will be assessed by a reviewer to see whether there is reason to suspect any irregularities These reports are limited because they do not include web camera images and sound.

The New Central Exams (BYOD)

You will take your exam not on a PC provided by the HU, in an exam room set up for that purpose, but on your own laptop in an exam room at a HU site. Your test will be administered in TestVision in combination with Proctorio, a program that in this situation only records your screen during your test.

There is not enough space in the HU premises to provide a HU computer for each student. To give everyone the same chance, we treat everyone the same across the board and request that students bring their own laptops to do the test.

In the case of BYOD, Proctorio will not record any sounds and camera images and you will not be requested to provide an ID scan or room scan. Only your screen will be captured. However, an invigilator will be present at the HU site.

This way of testing is less sensitive to privacy and technical issues than the usual way of online proctoring, where you take the test at home. An additional advantage is that you can use your own program settings such as preferred language or any tools (if permitted) such as MS Office, ClaroRead, Microsoft Power BI, PuTTY, etc.

HU has made agreements with Proctorio about privacy. These agreements comply with the privacy legislation that applies within the the European privacy legislation.
The agreements differ from the privacy legislation that can be found on the site of Proctorio, because those are based on the US arrangements.
We explain the agreements in our privacy statement. Check out our frequently asked questions if you would like more information about your privacy.

Online proctoring

Online proctoring will still be used for administering knowledge tests, if it is not possible to do so on the basis of BYOD. We do this to avoid study delays.

Online proctoring is a way of online testing, where students can sit an exam online in any location with an Internet connection. This involves recording sound, camera images and the student’s ID, to prevent/recognize fraud. At the HU we use the proctoring software from Proctorio, in combination with an exam via the TestVision exam application.

No worries
We are aware of the fact that many students are worried that the software will wrongly label them as ‘cheats’. The fact is that the software does not detect fraud, the footage with conspicuous behaviour will be watched by HU staff members. (And you will not immediately be branded a fraud if you just look away briefly to think for a moment!) The best thing to do is to behave in a way during the exam as you would normally do during any other exam. Therefore, just try to focus on the contents of your exam.
