The organization of the conference ‘Smart Sustainable Cities 2017 – Viable Solutions’ (SSC2017) on 14 June 2017 in the historical city of Utrecht (the Netherlands) is ongoing. We are happy to announce that the programme comprises among other inspiring sessions the keynote speakers Maarten Hajer (former Director of the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Institute PBL), and Thomas Rau (famous ecological architect and one of Holland’s foremost thinkers of sustainability). Both are in the Top100 key players in sustainability in the Netherlands.
Social and environmental commitment, regard for the cultural context and mutual respect are at the heart of Thomas Rau’s approach to work. For this reason, he works closely with clients in the design of their projects. Thomas Rau regards ‘state-of-the-art’ to be merely the starting point for his work. An example of his performance at TEDXZwolle can be seen at:
Maarten Hajer is distinguished professor Urban Futures at the department of Geo Sciences of Utrecht University. Hajer is the author of more than ten books and many articles. For PBL he wrote the essay ‘The Energetic Society’ which connects his expertise to the wealth of knowledge at PBL. An example of a presentation can be seen at:
Furthermore twelve student teams from 5 different countries submitted their plans that contribute to the transition towards smart sustainable cities. Five nominees and one wild card for the public’s favourite are invited to pitch and compete for the Transition Zero Award 2017.
