The Amsterdam fire chief who tried to eradicate racism in his organization and was eventually fired. A masterclass about courage, peer pressure, and guiding complex group dynamics.
Leen Schaap visits the Archimedes Institute on 16 March for a masterclass. He was a fire chief in Amsterdam and was tasked with eliminating racism, sexism, and a rotten culture.
With courage, he set to work, but was soon thwarted. What can we learn from him as teachers? A fresh perspective can help us. We are happy to talk to students and teachers. If you want to change a culture at school, how do you do it?
As an (informal) leader, how do you deal with peer pressure in an atmosphere where sexism and racism are the norms? How do you guide complex group dynamics?
There is sufficient room for dialogue and discussion in the master class.
Leen wrote an accessible book about his experiences: Brand in Amsterdam.
