The Feel at Home Festival is already over and was a great success. Well-known speakers such as Hanna van Vliet and Fresku were guests, great activities were organized, and interesting training sessions were attended. In the next few articles, we will once again take you through this successful week.
Hanna van Vliet opened the Feel at home festival with an interesting interview. You may know her from the well-known Netflix series and film Anne+, in which she played the leading role.
The interview started with the important question: “Where do you feel at home?” To which Hannah replied:
"I feel at home when I come home, but I also feel at home when I am with the queer community."
After Hanna van Vliet, Fresku was the next to get all the questions. Fresku is a well-known Dutch rapper, and you can know him from his well-known hits such as Glimlach and Nieuwe Dag.
He got also asked, “Where do you feel at home?” His fast answer was:
"I feel at home where I feel safe."
They both try to make a difference in equality in the Netherlands. Hanna started this by working on the Anne+ series. This started as a project with friends and eventually turned into a much-watched series on Netflix. At the moment, Hanna is a role model for many young people, and with this, she hopes to show that the queer community is a very nice community and worth coming out for. She also hopes to contribute to a more representative film industry, which everyone can identify with.
Fresku makes a difference by drawing attention to discrimination and stereotyping. In various songs such as Witlof and DWDD by him, he talks about these topics. He has also written another version of the Canon of the Netherlands, 50 subjects from Dutch culture, in collaboration with Arjan Lubach, in which he emphasizes that there are different sides to slavery.
"I invite those conversations through my art"
Fresku
But to make a difference, you have to start the conversation. That is ultimately the main idea of both interviews. And how you do this is up to you. Hanna starts the conversation by telling a story through a camera. Fresku starts the conversation through his microphone. Every little bit helps, as long as you keep talking. To understand and want to be understood. Both means are the key to a world where everyone is allowed and able to be there.
