Birding in the Botanical Gardens
Mattie, a biologist from Utrecht, took us on a birding excursion through the Botanical Gardens. He regularly organizes birding excursions around Utrecht with his fellow birders (Matties).
Before the Botanical Gardens reception, we did a check-in: what is everyone’s birding level? The group varied in birding experience – from beginners to experts. With binoculars and cameras ready, we set off.
Throughout the Botanical Gardens, we discovered a few special spots where you can best spot birds.
Spotting kingfishers along the water's edge
Along the water of the Botanical Gardens, you will find a small hole in the embankment with a branch in front of it. This is the nesting place of the kingfisher. You can find these swooping over the water – but grab your camera or binoculars quickly, because they fly over the water at lightning speed!
And tip from Mattie: get up early! Early morning is the best time to go birding.
Bird hide "De Tuinfluiter"
Relaxing indoors and birding? You can do so in the bird hide!
Among the native plants of the Kromme Rijn area, you will find the bird hide. This natural setting is the perfect place to spy on birds so they don’t see you.
The peregrine falcons on the Utrecht University building
Near the Buzz-stop (bee hotels), you can find a large grey building belonging to Utrecht University. Look up at the big letters on the building. Between these, you can spot peregrine falcons!
We found one at the bottom of the ‘T’. With a spotting scope, we could see the peregrine even better!
