Surprisingly, the cheese is named after the city and not the other way around. Gouda was also not the city it originated from, instead it was produced throughout the entire Netherlands. However, it was one of the few places in the country where cheese producers were able to exchange products during Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This led to Gouda having a monopoly on the cheese trade which turned into the largest cheese market in the country. Hence, thanks to these facts, the cheese Gouda came to life.
