Transgender personen vormen helaas een kwetsbare en gemarginaliseerde groep, die te maken krijgt met veel onbegrip en discriminatie (Movisie, 2021). Zo’n 0,7% van onze collega’s en studenten identificeert als transgender. Zij verdienen onze steun. Je kunt de LHBTIQA+ gemeenschap zien als de spreekwoordelijke kanarie in de kolenmijn (Nori Spouwen in FD, 4 maart 2022). Als het goed gaat met ‘de kanarie’ is dat een positieve indicator van sociale veiligheid. Als LHBT-ers zich veilig voelen, is de kans groot dat anderen zich ook veilig voelen.

Vanuit de Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) van de Hogeschool Utrecht roepen we alle collega’s op om die dag (of je nou fysiek op locatie bent of online meetings hebt) uit te dragen dat jij de trans community steunt, bijvoorbeeld door kleding te dragen in de kleuren van de trans vlag en/of buttons met symbolen/teksten en/of een andere creatieve manier. Doe jij mee en toon jij ook je support voor ons transgender studenten en medewerkers? Dankjewel vast!

Transgenders, unfortunately, form a vulnerable and marginalized group, which has to deal with a lot of misunderstanding and discrimination (Movisie, 2021). About 0.7% of our colleagues and students identify as transgender. They deserve our support. You can see the LGBTIQA+ community as the proverbial canary in the coal mine (Nori Spouwen in FD, March 4, 2022). If ’the canary’ is doing well, this is a positive indicator of social safety. If LGBTQA+ people feel safe, chances are that others will feel safe too.

From the Gender and Sexuality Alliance  (GSA) of Hogeschool Utrecht, we call on all colleagues to show on March 31th (whether you are physically on location or have online meetings) that you support the trans community, for example by wearing clothing in the colors of the trans flag and/or buttons with symbols/texts and/or another creative way.
