International Conference on Blended Learning and Open Educational Resources on the Campus of Alcoi, Universitat Politecnica de Valencia, the 22th of September 2015.

Apart of listening and exchange experiences in the conference, a city lab was formed. The city lab did consist of three groups, studying the sustainable aspects on water, energy and mobility in Alcoy. All the participants did receive some weeks before the start a learning document – with the information  needed to be prepared to participate at the city lab. During the lunch participants received a beautiful demonstration on the use of sustainable materials to use for building and construction.

International Smart Sustainable Cities Event in the Skanssi Area, Turku, the 6th of November 2015

What will Skanssi area look like in the future? In what direction the Skanssi area should be developed? How can we engage the citizens into the design process?

The event was about the development of the Skanssi area by using creative solution searching tools. During the Smart Sustainable Cities Event held in the Skanssi Shopping Centre, the audience did listen to interesting speeches about the future plans of the area. The audience was involved in developing the area to a smart and sustainable area. This resulted in learning about the plans for the future Skanssi area, experiencing the creativity tools, development of fresh ideas in workshops. Networking with experts, professionals, students and company representatives. All this resulted in an inspiring day about the smart and sustainable city planning, with a good and professional company. The different groups in the workshop were coached by Essence staff.

The international conference ‘Smart Sustainable Cities 2017 – Viable Solutions’ was held on 14 June 2017 in Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The overall theme of the day was ‘Smart Sustainable Cities – Viable Solutions’, covering four conference topics: ‘the transition’, ‘opportunities and innovation’, ‘living well together’ and ‘systems in the city’.
The plenary programme had a line-up of inspiring keynote speakers: Jan Bogerd (chairman of the Executive Board of HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht), Thomas Rau (a famous Dutch ecological architect), Maarten Hajer (distinguished Professor of Urban Futures at Utrecht University), Ivo Opstelten (Professor of New Energy in the City at HU UAS) and Andy van den Dobbelsteen (Professor of Climate Design and Sustainability of Delft University of Technology). The conference was chaired by Talitha Muusse, Social Entrepreneur. Over 250 participants from all over Europe attended the conference.
