Content
This honour course introduces the student to the present world view of physics. It has very little overlap with high school physics but emphasizes instead on the theories which are now cutting edge in the world of physics.
The student needs to be able to have the following math capability: differention and integration.
The study material is in english, the lectures will be given in dutch.
Learning outcomes
1) The student has basic knowledge of the major physics theories.
2) The student can perform basic calculations used in major physics theories.
3) The student can research a (for the student new) advanced physics item and present the information as learning material (for new students).
The student has basic knowledge of the major physics theories:
– 4 forces of nature (gravity, electromagnetism, strong nuclear force, weak nuclear force)
– standard model (quarks + leptons + force bosons)
– quantum mechanics (Schrödinger, Dirac)
– special relativity theory
– general relativity theory (light)
The student can perform basic calculations used in major physics theories.
– lagrangian mechanics (intro)
– hamiltionan mechanics (intro)
– quantum mechanics (intro), only schrodinger equation, no bra-ket
The student can research a (for the student new) advanced physics item and present the information as learning material (for new students).
Planning
The course is open for every kind of student. The sessions will be held in the evening hours on Tuesday for all the weeks of period B (total 10~11 wks).
