Immersion in Spanish Language, Culture and Life

If you are looking for a study abroad period in Spain, but lack the Spanish language skills to follow courses in Spanish, this minor allows you to live and study in Spain and learn Spanish at the same time.

OR

If have acquired a certain level of Spanish within your programme or otherwise, and wish to strengthen your Spanish in a truly international environment in Spain, this is the programme for you.

Admission

This programme is open to students who have acquired 60 ECTS of their first year.

The Examination Board determines which minors do not have a higher professional education level and/or have an unacceptable overlap with the compulsory curriculum of your own study programme. Check at the page Not allowed minor courses under your institute which minors are not allowed. 

Content

This is a Study Abroad minor in Alcala de Henares, Spain.

Alcala de Henares is a small, very old, city close to Madrid; the Universidad Alcala de Henares is one of the best Spanish universities (independent rankings) and HU-Business Studies (previously CE) has been enjoying a lively working relationship from the start of Erasmus (early 1990’s).

Students will follow intensive, interactive classes in Spanish language and Spanish culture in a truly international classroom and outside the classroom trough fieldtrips and social, cultural and sports activities. The assignments the students engage in, will be tailored to their professional practice/academic background. HU students are encouraged to select topics connected to their academic or professional fields — such as Business, Law, Sciences, or other disciplines — to ensure alignment with their studies at HU.

Learning Objectives

The programme will allow HU students from any programme:

  • To learn Spanish at their own level; start form beginners level or further strengthen their Spanish language capabilities;
  • To increase and their knowledge about Spanish Culture and Civilisation and Economy;
  • Immerse themselves in Spanish language and culture by studying and living in Alcala de Henares, Spain for the duration of the minor

Courses

Available for all levels; for absolute beginners to more advanced student looking to further improve their skills in Spanish language and knowledge about Spain. Depending on the student’s starting level, everything between A1 and C2 can be followed

The minor offers a language, culture, and business/professional component (which can be adapted to the student’s own professional background). In the language classes, assignments are linked to the student’s professional field. Business students, for instance, do a Sales Pitch or a Negotiation role play – this means broadening and deepening their international business knowledge, cultural understanding, and application—truly elevating the student to a higher level. Engineering students may practice their skills in their field.

Assessments

The credits not only reflect classroom attendance and participation, but also the time spent in individual study, completing set work and taking part in cultural and social activities included in the programme, etc..

  • In the Language course (Language and communication and Oral and written skills) each student will have their own portfolio (Portfolio) that must include all their work for the course.
    • The final grade will be based on the following elements:
    • Continuous work: 35%
    • Attendance and participation: 25%
    • Partial exam: 20%
    • Final exam: 20%
  • In the Culture courses, in general, the subjects are evaluated through oral presentations and / or written works on any of the topics covered during the course. It is up to the teacher to decide whether to take a test or final exam.

Schedule

In order to reach full immersion into Spanish Language, Culture and Life you will have in-person classes on the premises in Alcala de Henares every day of the week, between 9.00 and 13.30/15.00 during your stay abroad. The number of absences may not exceed 10% of the program/course hours.
